Anatomy & asana,
a teacher-training workshop
Recognize and understand imbalances and unhealthy patterns in your own body. Whether you are struggling with illness or injury in your spine, shoulders, or hips, or you want to learn more about your microanatomy like the lymphatic system and nervous system, this will workshop will address all of that plus your questions surrounding those topics. It is a workshop where the power is now in your hands to help yourself and in turn help others.
Understanding the basic function and alignment of bodies is a critical tool for yoga teachers to effectively assist their students with progress without injury in the yoga practice. With this hands-on anatomy weekend workshop, Laura Gorham will help you deepen your understanding of human anatomy and kinesiology in relationship to the yoga practice and teaching of yoga asana.
Laura will introduce you to the foundations of microanatomy and gross anatomy, body biomechanics, postural patterns, the role of fascia and connective tissue, strengthening and stretching, and how to recognize and understand imbalances and unhealthy patterns in the human body and in asanas. You will then learn how to integrate this foundational knowledge into your practice and teaching which will refine your ability to help yourself and your students work safely and optimally in the asana practice.

Laura Gorham
Laura is the owner and founder of The Shala of Pittsburgh Ashtanga Yoga and has been practicing yoga for over 15 years. She was introduced to yoga through the Ashtanga method, but when she moved to Pittsburgh 13 years ago she couldn't find a dedicated Ashtanga Yoga studio in the area. She began to practice Baptiste style yoga, eventually completed 200 hours of teacher training in this method, and taught for a few years afterward. However, 8 years ago Laura began to crave the Ashtanga Yoga method she was first introduced to years prior, so she decided to stop teaching power yoga and focus on a dedicated Ashtanga Yoga practice. She has studied with multiple Certified and Authorized Ashtanga Yoga Instructors: Kino MacGregor, David Swenson, David Garrigues, Taylor Hunt, Tim Feldmann, Sharath Jois, Krista Shirley and Tim Miller. Finding a deep resonation with Tim Miller, she chose him as her primary teacher. Laura travels at least once or twice yearly to study with Tim, travels regularly to Columbus to study with Taylor Hunt, and she has completed over 400 hours of teacher training in both the Primary Series and Intermediate Series of Ashtanga Yoga. Laura is now 8 years into her Ashtanga practice, has her master teacher’s blessing to teach this method of yoga, and is currently studying the 3rd Series (Advanced A) under Tim Miller and Taylor Hunt's tutelage.
Laura says, “Yoga is a physical and spiritual journey that empowers the practitioner to find his or her own inner spiritual peace. This journey is meant to take a lifetime. Don’t rush your practice; rather, be diligent, be disciplined, be patient, and practice often. Only then will you find spiritual growth and peace in your practice and in everything else that you do.”
Laura has an infinite love and passion for the method of Ashtanga Yoga. She has seen and felt her body, spirit, and mind transform while practicing regularly and working steadily through the Primary, Intermediate, and Third Series of Ashtanga Yoga. She is thrilled to share this method of yoga with you!
