The Mysore method is the most intimate, personal and developed way of practicing yoga is also the most traditional, time-honored and historic method. The ‘Mysore Style’ method is named after the city (Mysore) where this method originated, based on the teachings of yoga teacher, Auruvedic healer, and scholar, Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, also known as the "father of modern yoga".
The Mysore style of yoga asana practice is a particular way of teaching yoga within the Ashtanga Yoga tradition. There are some differences in this method from the usual modern way in which yoga is taught. The class is not "led" as a whole but rather all instruction is one-on-one within the group class setting. Students practice their own portion of the Ashtanga sequence of asanas at their own pace. The teacher assists each student individually by giving physical adjustments & verbal instruction.

One of two methods used to teach Ashtanga Yoga |
a. Led format is the more popular way/method for teaching because you can fit more bodies into a room and fit more classes onto a schedule in the led format
b. Mysore method teaches each student individually based on their needs. In contrast Led classes teach to an entire class, sometimes intimidating students not as fit or flexible as others in a large class. |
A city in Southern India where the Astanga style of Yoga originated |
The Mysore method of Ashtanga yoga is a way of teaching yoga within the tradition as taught in Mysore, South India. There are some differences in this method from the usual Western way yoga is taught, but the general idea is the same. The class is not "led" as a whole but rather all instruction is one-on-one within a group class setting. Students learn the practice by memory and practice what's been taught to them at their own pace. The teacher assists each student individually by giving physical adjustments, verbal instruction and by helping them refine their technique and form.
The deep sound of breathing, a warm and energetic room, and the abundance of sweat are all things you can expect to greet you upon first entering a Mysore style yoga class. Whether here in Orlando, or in any number of other cities around the world; seeing a Mysore style class in progress for the first time definitely leaves an impression! But once you try it out for yourself, you may find it an amazing forum for cultivating a transformative yoga practice. |
